Our assessment process

Our ADHD assessments use a collaborative model between a psychiatrist and clinical psychologist to provide a comprehensive evaluation of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

1

Psychiatric Consultation

The process begins with an initial consultation with a psychiatrist. During this appointment, the psychiatrist reviews your current concerns, developmental history, medical background, and mental health history. This appointment helps determine whether a full ADHD assessment is appropriate and identifies any medical or mental health factors that may contribute to attention or executive functioning difficulties.

2

Psychological Assessment

Following this consultation, a clinical psychologist conducts a detailed psychological assessment. This may include structured interviews, standardised questionnaires, and cognitive testing that examines attention, executive functioning, as well as screening for other conditions that can overlap with ADHD.

3

Collaborative Diagnosis

The psychologist’s findings are then reviewed collaboratively with the psychiatrist. Using this integrated information, the psychiatrist determines whether the diagnostic criteria for ADHD are met under current clinical guidelines.

4

Feedback & Treatment Plan

Clients receive a comprehensive feedback session and written report outlining the assessment findings and personalised treatment recommendations. Where appropriate, the psychiatrist can provide medical management, while the psychologist can support ongoing therapy, skill development, and strategies to improve functioning.

Who we help

We work with adults who suspect they may have ADHD, those seeking a formal diagnosis, and patients with an existing diagnosis who need ongoing management or a fresh clinical perspective.

Adult ADHD Diagnosis Late-Identified ADHD ADHD + Anxiety ADHD + Depression ADHD + ASD Workplace Performance Executive Function Medication Review

Unlike standalone ADHD clinics, your psychiatrist diagnoses and initiates treatment, your nurse practitioner manages ongoing medication, and your psychologist provides skills-based therapy — all communicating directly. This means continuity, not fragmented care.

Frequently asked questions

How is adult ADHD diagnosed?

At Halcyon Health, adult ADHD is diagnosed through a collaborative assessment between a psychiatrist and clinical psychologist. The process begins with a psychiatric consultation covering current concerns, developmental history, and mental health background. A clinical psychologist then conducts detailed psychological testing including structured interviews, standardised questionnaires, and cognitive assessment of attention and executive functioning. The psychologist’s findings are reviewed collaboratively with the psychiatrist, who determines whether the diagnostic criteria for ADHD are met under current clinical guidelines. You receive a comprehensive feedback session and written report with personalised treatment recommendations.

Can ADHD be diagnosed via telehealth?

Yes. ADHD assessment and diagnosis can be conducted effectively via telehealth. The core components of ADHD diagnosis, including clinical interview, symptom rating scales, history-taking, and behavioural observation, do not require physical examination. Telehealth removes many of the practical barriers to ADHD assessment — including the need to travel, take time off work, or sit in waiting rooms, all of which can be particularly challenging for people with ADHD. At Halcyon Health, the full ADHD assessment pathway is available via secure video.

What ADHD medication options are available?

ADHD medication falls into two main categories: stimulant and non-stimulant. Stimulant medications (methylphenidate and dexamfetamine preparations) are the first-line treatment and are effective for the majority of adults with ADHD. Non-stimulant options include atomoxetine and guanfacine. Your psychiatrist will discuss the benefits, side effects, and regulatory requirements of each option. In Australia, stimulant prescribing for ADHD requires state-specific authority and ongoing monitoring.

What is your coordinated ADHD care model?

Halcyon Health delivers ADHD care through a coordinated multidisciplinary model. Your psychiatrist conducts the diagnostic assessment and initiates medication. Our nurse practitioner manages ongoing medication titration, dose adjustments, side effect monitoring, and routine follow-ups, providing timely access without long waits for psychiatrist appointments. Your psychologist delivers ADHD-focused CBT, executive function coaching, and skills-based strategies. Your treating clinicians communicate directly, so your care is seamless.

How long is the wait for an ADHD assessment?

Wait times for adult ADHD assessment in Australia can exceed 12 months in the public system and several months in many private practices. Halcyon Health’s coordinated care model is designed to reduce wait times. While we cannot guarantee specific wait times, our model is built to provide faster access than traditional single-psychiatrist practices. Contact us for current availability.
