Common questions

What conditions does a telehealth psychiatrist treat?

A telehealth psychiatrist provides the same specialist care as an in-person psychiatrist. At Halcyon Health, our psychiatrist treats depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders (including generalised anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, and OCD), PTSD and complex trauma, ADHD, eating disorders, personality disorders, substance use disorders, perinatal mental health, and the psychiatric aspects of chronic pain. Telehealth consultations are conducted via secure video and are eligible for Medicare rebates with a valid GP referral.

Do I need a GP referral to see a psychiatrist?

Yes. In Australia, a valid GP referral is required to see a psychiatrist and to access Medicare rebates. The referral is typically valid for 12 months and can be sent to us via secure clinical messaging (such as Medical Objects). If you do not yet have a referral, we can guide you through the process. Your GP needs to write a referral letter addressed to Halcyon Health.

How much does a telehealth psychiatry appointment cost?

Halcyon Health is a private billing practice. You pay the full consultation fee upfront, and we submit a Medicare claim on your behalf electronically. If eligible, the Medicare rebate will be deposited directly into your account by Medicare. The gap is the difference between our fee and the Medicare rebate. Detailed fees are provided at the time of booking.

What happens in a first psychiatry appointment?

Your initial psychiatric assessment is a comprehensive consultation via secure video. Your psychiatrist will review your referral and history, ask about your current symptoms, previous treatments, medical history, and personal circumstances. You will receive a diagnostic formulation, a discussion of treatment options (which may include medication, therapy referrals, or both), and a personalised care plan. A report is sent back to your referring GP.

Can a psychiatrist prescribe medication via telehealth?

Yes. Psychiatrists are fully qualified medical specialists who can prescribe medication via telehealth, including antidepressants, mood stabilisers, antipsychotics, anxiolytics, and ADHD medications (stimulants and non-stimulants). Prescriptions are sent electronically. For controlled medications such as stimulants, state-specific regulations apply and ongoing monitoring is managed through regular follow-up appointments with the psychiatrist or treating team.
